Food Inflation Continues It’s Destructive Rise

The cost of groceries has continued an upward trajectory in recent months but the increase may have slowed a bit….good news but the rate of increase annualized is frightening.

Food prices rose 3.7% between September 2022 and September 2023, according to the most recent consumer price index (CPI) report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. By comparison, at the same time in 2022 prices rose 11.2% over a one-year period. The CPI uses indexes to measure changes in the average costs of items in a given period. There are specific indexes for these items, including food costs. Source-Nerd Wallet

Simple math tells us that 3.7% x 12 = 44.4% increase annualized. That is a scary number…but what if it was only 2% a month, that “much lower rise” is still 24% increase annualized. This is not sustainable for most families, period.

Food inflation can have a significant impact on hourly workers, further exacerbating their financial struggles. As the cost of food rises, it puts added strain on already limited budgets, forcing workers to allocate a larger portion of their wages towards purchasing basic necessities. This leaves little room for discretionary spending or saving, pushing hourly workers into a cycle of financial instability. Moreover, soaring food prices can erode the purchasing power of the limited wages earned by these workers, which can lead to difficulties in meeting their nutritional needs and potentially compromising their overall well-being. The combination of rising food prices and stagnant wages creates a challenging situation for hourly workers, highlighting the pressing need for affordable access to quality food for all individuals in our society.
